Named Inc. Magazine’s “Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year,” Sonny founded Sunshine Day, a national holiday celebrated in all 50 states to encourage parents to give children time and love. The City of San Antonio honored him with the Sonny Melendrez Community Center for his dedication to disadvantaged youth and families. President Reagan praised his efforts in the war on drugs, and he received the FBI Director’s Award and the Department of Justice’s Modern Hero Award for inspiring youth.
